Brackenfield pupils have again taken part in the Mary’s Meals backpack project to give needy children in developing countries the essential items they need for school such as pencils, rulers and pens.
The pupils brought rucksacks filled with school essentials to donate to the charity. There are an estimated 59 million of the world’s hungriest children who do not attend school. Mary’s Meals is a charity that tries to tackle this by providing meals for children who attend school in countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Headteacher Pat Sowa was delighted with the children’s response to the charity, donating a total of 46 bags.
“Packing basic items such as pencils really brought home to the pupils here how little some of their counterparts in many countries actually have. By donating these backpacks, the children realised just how much we take for granted. They really understand what a difference their donation will make to children their own age.”
Mary’s Meals is one of several charities Brackenfield supports at Christmas.
Principal, Anthony Comerford was delighted with the children’s response: “This means so much to the children since they know that their backpack is going to a child of a similar age who is less fortunate than themselves.
“It really does open their eyes to the struggle so many children in the world have on a daily basis. I am so pleased that we are able to support this worthwhile charity.”
